Gansbaai's coastal shelf drops to depths exceeding 800 metres within two nautical miles of Danger Point, creating a nutrient upwelling that draws southern right whales to Walker Bay and Dyer Island channel each austral winter.
Between June and December, breeding females and calves occupy the shallow bays while males patrol the deeper water column, their presence so reliable that the town's harbour now dispatches more whale-watching vessels than fishing trawlers. The migration pattern, documented by marine biologists since the species' protection in 1935, follows a 6,000-kilometre route from sub-Antarctic feeding grounds to the warmer calving waters of South Africa's southern cape.
Gansbaai whale watching became a regulated commercial activity in 1994, two years after the collapse of the region's abalone stocks redirected the harbour's economic base toward ecotourism. The town sits 40 kilometres east of Hermanus along the Whale Coast, a 130-kilometre stretch of littoral zone designated an International Whale Heritage Site in 2021. Where Hermanus offers clifftop observation, Gansbaai's operators run boat-based excursions into Shark Alley and the Dyer Island Marine Protected Area, intersecting the migratory corridor at its densest concentration. Marine Dynamics, established in 1989 as a cage-diving outfit, pivoted to cetacean tours in 2003 and now operates under permits from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, which caps daily vessel numbers and enforces a 300-metre approach threshold.
The gansbaai whale season overlaps with seal breeding activity on Geyser Rock, where 60,000 Cape fur seals haul out between May and September. This convergence produces sightings of the Marine Big Five—southern right whale, great white shark, Cape fur seal, African penguin, and bronze whaler—within a single three-hour sortie. Skippers navigate the 8-kilometre strait between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, where water temperatures range from 12°C to 16°C and visibility averages 5 to 8 metres. Hydrophone recordings capture the low-frequency calls of right whales, whose baleen plates filter up to 2 tonnes of copepods daily. Calves, born at 4 to 6 metres and 1,000 kilograms, gain 50 kilograms per week on milk that is 60 percent fat. By November, juveniles breach repeatedly in what researchers interpret as muscle conditioning for the return migration south. The species' population, estimated at 300 individuals in 1935, exceeded 4,200 by 2018, making Gansbaai's waters among the highest-density observation zones in the Southern Hemisphere.
